Frequently, back teeth have very deep pits and groves in them on the biting
surface. These pits and grooves are very difficult to keep clean. Food
and plaque can lie there and cause decay. Deep pits can be sealed with
a hard glass-like substance that is painted on the tooth and is hardened
with a curing light. This substance prevents the accumulation of food
and plaque and seals out bacteria. The sealant provides years of protection
and the procedure is completely painless. Sealants are much more conservative
and a proactive treatment, rather than restoring teeth after decay has
begun.
